Department of Education and Skills – Wellbeing during COVID-19

In March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the government to close schools across Ireland. Not knowing when classes would resume but wanting to help young people and their parents stay positive and well, the Department of Education and Skills tapped into the expertise of the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS). Their psychologists developed a number of recommendations and suggestions – but the challenge was to ensure that pupils and parents would understand and engage with these.

What We Did
  • Poster Design
  • Motion Graphics
  • Brochure Design
The Approach

To make the NEPS suggestions as easy as possible to understand, The Smart Group developed a suite of materials. This included animated videos and downloadable posters which complemented materials and activities that the students’ own schools may have supplied. Using a friendly 2D animation style, the videos contained simple suggestions for staying active, connected and informed during lockdown.

At the same time, videos for parents offered support and ways for them to step in as a home teacher. Central to the programme was a series of ‘Plan for the Day’ posters. These downloadable PDFs suggested a timetable of activities or allowed people to create their own plan. To make them as engaging as possible, the DIY versions were supplied as blank outlines. Kids could then go wild with markers, colouring pencils, paint, glitter or whatever they needed to make them as personalised as possible.

Word about the materials spread rapidly via Twitter and news about the videos was liked and retweeted hundreds of time by primary and secondary schools all over Ireland.
